Midden is an archaeological term for an old dump for domestic waste, hence the title of the show, Hidden in Middens. Obviously, you can learn a lot about a culture by what people throw away. I started photographing the heaps that people build in their front yards prior to trash pick-up. I noticed all the stuff we use in our culture and how the objects and refuse made rather interesting compositions. These photographs were printed on canvas and hand colored with oil paints. They were shown at UTSA Downtown in the Art Gallery. The Show was curated by Arturo Almeida and shown with Ramin Samandari's photographs of cacti superimposed with poetry from Baudelaire's Fleur de Mal. We called this show Revelations in the Landscape. My portion was called Hidden in Middens:
