El Gran Dia de los Artistas, the Great Day of the Artists was a community event organized by Centro Cultural Azlan with the help of Proyecto Locos (Deborah Keller-Rihn, Ramon Vasquez y Sanchez and Erik Bosse) in 2005. Protecto Locos went to San Miguel de Allende to study the community event there called Dia de los Locos. We studied this event and modeled our event in San Antonio on the Mexican celebration in San Miguel that happens every year in June on the Sunday closest to the celebration of San Antonio. San Antonio is the patron saint of the artist, animals and yes, the Crazies too. We created a masked parade on Fredericksburg Road and invited the community to participate. This event was made to celebrate Centro Cultural Aztlan's new location on Fredericksburg Road in the Deco area. As it turns out, more artists in San Antonio live in the Deco District that in any other area of the city. Area businesses and galleries were invited to participate. Bihl Haus Arts had a poetry reading and about twenty area businesses and organizations participated to create a huge celebration of the arts. There was a ribbon cutting ceremony and a festival at Centro Cultural Aztlan with a movie about the mask making tradition in the Deco Building by Erik Bosse along with food booths, an exhibition at Centro, live music and arts and crafts booths, etc. Many dignitaries attended including Mayor Phil Hardberger.
This project was supported by a grant from San Antonio's Department of Culture and Creative Development. These photographs capture the spirit of the event and were taken by Ramin Samandari.
